The speculation around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
